The 3-month Support Programme for Field Guides is aimed at providing inexperienced learners an opportunity to build a marketable portfolio of qualifications, while gaining 3 months of practical experience.  This places the learner in a competitive position to obtain placement in quality positions in the guiding industry.  Candidates are accommodated (all meals included) on the premises of The Nature College for a period of 3 months, during which time they will obtain training for the qualifications listed below.

                        

 

Training Modules

SAQA Registered Guide Qualifications

  1. Introduction to Nature Guiding 0040 (Nature Site Guide Level 2 – SAQA 8478, 8440, 8456 - Level 2/3)

  2. Introductory Tracker Course (SAQA 8460 - Level 2)

  3. Intro to Dangerous Animals Guiding 0043 (SAQA 335797 -  Level 4)

  4. Rifle proficiency (SAQA 117705, 119651 - Level 3)

Additional Training Modules

  1. First Aid Training

  2. Hospitality Training

  3. Basic Wildlife Management skills (Game fences, erosion control, game counts, anti-poaching patrols)

  4. 4X4 driving skills

Dates

Learners can commence the next Programme on 5 Sept 2012, and it will be concluded by 5 Dec 2012.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum age of 18 years and good health

Grade 12 or Equivalent Qualification with valid Driver’s License (or to be obtained)

General

The course planning includes several practical excursions (several short tours and one long tour) to Reserves and National Parks throughout the region, where the theoretical and practical knowledge obtained during the various courses is applied in a different habitat to where the training has taken place.  This expands the area competence of learners by exposing them to different biomes.

Maximum group size of 12-14 learners will ensure that every learner gets personal attention.  We pride ourselves in our attention to detail, something that is not always possible where large groups are concerned.

Job Recruitment

The Nature College assists learners with recruitment.  After completion of the 3-month training, successful learners can be assisted with job seeking at suitable lodges and operators.
