Why The Nature College?

Why do a qualification through the Nature College?

The Nature College is built on 25 years of experience in nature guiding.  Johan Fourie started his career in Nature Guiding in the Kruger National Park in 1982.  Since then he has assembled a vast amount of knowledge about guiding in Southern Africa, including Botswana and Namibia.  This knowledge and expertise is ploughed back into his team of trainers and assessors, and made available to student guides through our range of guide training programmes and handbooks for guide training.

The Nature College has developed it own unique training programmes and materials independent of other providers and associations such as FGASA.  This has led to a fresh approach to guide training, interesting handbooks and stimulating course presentations.  Our assessment techniques and procedures are highly rated by THETA, and are designed to be user friendly, but also a real test of ability.  Once you have been approved by a Nature College assessment, we can send you into the guiding world with confidence.  A qualification from The Nature College is a guarantee to your prospective employer that you have been equipped with good, solid guiding skills and a practical approach to guiding.

The Nature College has built an effective administrative system that will produce quick results.  We have learnt from experience and have streamlined our systems be practical and efficient.  We do not want customers frustrated by bad administration.  We have a high level of personal interaction and involvement with clients, and our students remain associated with The Nature College for years without having to pay annual subscription fees.

Training Centre

Training Centre

Courses are presented at The Aardvark Centre for Nature Studies, situated in the Aardvark Nature Reserve.

While resident at the training centre, student participation is expected in housekeeping and preparation of meals.  This is aimed at building experience towards managing a guiding operation such as a bush camp or overlanding safari.

Meals are simple and aimed at being healthy and nutritious.  Breakfast consists of cereals and toast.  A typical lunch could consist of cold meats, salads and bread.  In the evening students will prepare a cooked meal, e.g. a potjiekos, oven roast with vegetables or a braai with pap and gravy.  If students want fancy trimmings with their meals, they must provide this themselves.

Students are taught to be creative and innovative, simulating conditions found in a bush camp or on an overlanding safari.

Development Programme for Nature Guides

Development Programme for Nature Guides

With the growth currently experienced in the tourism industry throughout Southern Africa, the demand for qualified and experienced nature guides is on the increase.

The reality is that very few establishments are willing to appoint a nature guide with no experience. Our Development Programme bridges this gap by training learners in the relevant skills as well as creating the opportunity to gain the necessary experience to enter the market as a qualified Nature Guide.

The Development Programme
This 12 month programme is structured as follows:

Six month training phase living at the premises of The Nature College. During this phase the candidates will attend (amongst others) a total of five SAQA registered guide courses, namely:

  • The Introductory Nature Guide Course - 15 day course
  • Advanced Nature Guide Course - 12 day course
  • Introductory Tracker Course - 7-day course
  • Trails Guide Course - 6-day course
  • Birding for Guides - 5-day course

Training in guiding skills is supplemented by a basic course in archaeology, with extensive training and experience in bush camp management and overlanding safarisStudy tours will be conducted to five South African Biomes, enabling learners to obtain area competence to these regions.

During this period learners will also be exposed to a structured programme of practical wildlife training under guidance of a full-time facilitator, and will receive credits for six practical wildlife management competencies.

Six months internship at a game lodge. Successful learners are placed at top game lodges for a period of six months to gain practical experience. The lodges will supply free accommodation and meals.
